"It makes good sense to use clay for pots, vases, pitchers, and platters, but I like to have things both ways. I make things that could be functional, but I really want them to be considered works of art." -Betty Woodman* Betty Woodman (b. 1930) is internationally recognized as one of the most important ceramic artists working today. Through her inventive use of color and form and her expert blend of a wide range of influences, she creates exuberant and captivating ceramic sculpture. Employing many forms, from fragmented wall vases to bronze benches to pillow pitchers, she presents a delightful gathering of influences and traditions. Woodman has traveled extensively, finding inspiration in cultures around the world. Artist and writer Jeff Perrone has described Woodman’s remarkable ability to draw on many sources: As a body of work, her ‘style’ is an ever-changing constellation of ceramic styles…This ceramic eclecticism is an implicit critique of modernist “purity”, the leveling of variety and difference. But Woodman’s eclecticism, her pluralism is not a scrambling or confusion of systems. It is the selection of what is best from various styles; it requires more care, more orderliness to be an eclectic than to apply a single standard or adhere to a single model. For Woodman, this eclectic gathering is an essential part of her process: http://www.franklloyd.com/dynamic/artist_bio.asp?ArtistID=37 Have you discovered a "style" in your art or your way of dress or decorating? If so, what style do you employ in your art-making, dress or decoration? As Betty is constantly changing in her preferences of ceramic styles, she appears to stay consistent to her love of bright colors and incorporating Matisse-like elements in her work. Your style is unique and personal to you. Describe your style preferences, and embrace your uniqueness!

I think that I have discovered a style in pottery that suites me and I try to use it in most of the pieces o make. I think my style is straight lines, nice and smooth pots and mostly bright colors. Every once and a while I'll use dark colors but most of the time I use bright colors because dark colors seem to make the piece look bland.

I think that my style in pottery varies depending on what I am making. If I had to say what my style would be, I would say that I like to take elements of things I see daily and incorporate them into pieces that I make. I love adding texture to my pieces and using darker colors.

I think my main style would be based off of what I'm doing and how I want it to look or how I would use the item. Using colors that compliments the piece is also a type of style I like to use.

I think my style consists of abstract lines and patterns. When creating my style I tend to stick to the cool tones of my color palette. When it comes to building, I really enjoy making flowers because of the uniqueness of them.

I haven't yet figured out what my kinda style in pottery is just yet. But I'm always up for a challenge, I do like to try new things. But I don't like to do the same things because then people are going to expect that from you and know your work when they see it. I like when people question my work and wonder "who's pice is that?" .

I think that my style is reflected on what my mood or what i'm feeling about my project. But i do like to try different things in my pieces like new glazes and different forms of building. I enjoy using both dark and lighter colors in my pieces because I always want a variation in my art.

My style in pottery is simple. I like to focus on the form and shape of the piece, rather than the surface decoration and glazes used. When I throw on the wheel, I tend to create pots and vases that mimick the human body. The glazes I use are more earthy, dark tones. Instead of using glazes that distract from the form, I try to use glazes that enhance it.

My style in pottery consists of intricate glaze work and 3-D building up, as well as, expirementing with many different styles. I have yet to create my own person style completely. However, I am still learning it by going through an evolution of styles through expirimintation that will lead me one day to a developed artisic style.

I think my style is simple. I don't really like craving unless I'm making something that requires it. I prefer to make my peices stand out with glazes, when I'm picking glazes I tend to lean towards blues and earth tones. I prefer clean lines over lines going all over the place. I don't have my own person style yet but I take many things from people and make it my own.

I like to experiment and try new things a lot, so I don't know if I really have a "style" yet. But, I do like to challenge myself and try to take things to the next level. I do like creating functional things so that they can be used.

I think my style is simple. I like colorful things, I like my glazes to stand out. I don't like boring glazes. I want something that will catch someone's eye and be amazed. I think it all depends on what i'm working on as well. I try to match things to what i'm making.

I think my style in pottery is simple when creating my peices. Yet bold when it comes to glazing and using detail. My style changes every project I do wheather it's the glaze I use or the details I apply to my piece.

My style tends vary with every project I do. I enjoy trying new things and discovering new techniques. I am a fan of flowing lines and wavy designs though, but like I said, I like to change it up and not stick to one particular style.

I think my style is very ambitious and sometimes that not a good thing. i want to do things complex and difficult and sometimes i just cant handle it but many times i can. i enjoy doing things that arent simple and require a thought process.

I think I have a more edgy style. I really like to try different types of glazes (more then one on each project) and mix glazes. I also like to "wow" people with my projects so I always try to think a little out of the box and on a higher level. I like my art work to be very neat and clean for the most part, but not too sophisticated.

I believe my style varies between the pieces I make. As of right now my style would be smooth with a little bit of sponge texture because I'm ok the wheel. I try to always keep a somewhat smooth style.

I would describe my style as comfy but stylish. Being comfortable is like one of my main concerns when it comes to my style and that's in any and everything! Even decorating rooms I want to make sure i'm comfortable in like the furniture and pieces around first then focus of looks.

My style, specifically in art, is more subtle. I enjoy making unique peices, however, I prefer to make pieces that are more neat, I guess you could say. I love a piece with clean lines and smooth edges, which is why I'm not a big fan of adding texture to the clay. I also like using more elusive colors rather than bright colors, such as greys and dark blues.

I'm not really sure exactly but what i do see myself doing a lot is a natural look. I love the way you can turn the clay into something that resembles a actual item in nature.
