"It makes good sense to use clay for pots, vases, pitchers, and platters, but I like to have things both ways. I make things that could be functional, but I really want them to be considered works of art."
-Betty Woodman* Betty Woodman (b. 1930) is internationally recognized as one of the most important ceramic artists working today. Through her inventive use of color and form and her expert blend of a wide range of influences, she creates exuberant and captivating ceramic sculpture. Employing many forms, from fragmented wall vases to bronze benches to pillow pitchers, she presents a delightful gathering of influences and traditions. Woodman has traveled extensively, finding inspiration in cultures around the world. Artist and writer Jeff Perrone has described Woodman’s remarkable ability to draw on many sources: As a body of work, her ‘style’ is an ever-changing constellation of ceramic styles…This ceramic eclecticism is an implicit critique of modernist “purity”, the leveling of variety and difference. But Woodman’s eclecticism, her pluralism is not a scrambling or confusion of systems. It is the selection of what is best from various styles; it requires more care, more orderliness to be an eclectic than to apply a single standard or adhere to a single model. For Woodman, this eclectic gathering is an essential part of her process:

I think that I have found a "style" in most of my art. I like to make round Potts with dark glazes on them. I think it's importiant to have a style in all of your art.

I have found a style in the way I build my own bowls. My stile is more of a short rounded bowl that I like in my way. If I make it different I walk also like it it's just not my style.

I have yet to find a permanent 'style'. I go with the flow and do what I naturally see fit for the piece of art that I am making at the moment.

I do experiment with other styles usually. I just come and go. I still haven't found a style of my own. But I hope to soon.

I don't think that i really have a particular style that I stick with for awhile it was slip trailing using glaze but I have kind of shy'd away from that. I like trying different things and change it up from time to time. I like to push myself to see what new things I can come up with and do even if it frustrates me along the way. The same ole same ole gets boring after awhile.

I don't really have a style yet. I like using brighter colors and blues. I really like using crystal glazes. I like creating pottery that is functional. I don't want to make something that's going to sit around my house and just collect dust. I want to be able to us it.

I think I have a style of making things pretty colorful, I like using multiple colors in my projects. I've also started to like marbling my glazes together, it's turned out really good so far

I have discovered in this that my "style" is inspired by nature. Most of my creations are nature looking like the leaf decorations I have made and the bird nests with robin eggs and many other thing. I also think that I choose nature color glazes, I use light shades of blues and greens and browns on most of my pottery.

I think I have a style of making things look antique and older and using multiple different glazes to achieve that. Recently I've started using tawny and Sahara sands as a base in many of my pieces

I think my style is mostly darker colors, with a light color to accent. I've also been using the crystal glazes lately.

I found my style is small cute things. I use a lot of blues and greens. Those two things seem to stay consistent in my pieces. I try to change it up try new things but I stay true to my small natural look.
