Recall a time you learned from an artistic "mistake".. share what you learned, and the frustrations you felt with that process/project. Due 2/19. Here's my view. How we Learn from Mistakes Learning from mistakes helps us grow. Falling happens alot when first riding a bike. Getting back up and riding again is the tough part. It's the repetitive doing that we as artists, learn, and by doing, and many times we discover more about that thing than we knew before. There's no substitute for hands-on practice, in both hand-building and wheel -throwing. While doing hands-on practice, learning can be "extrinsic" as well as "intrinsic". When learning a new skill, intentional thinking & focus is required. This is "extrinsic" and DIFFICULT practice. This could be slip-trailing or wheel-throwing, handle-making or carving. This is very extrinsic ( from external sources-a teacher or video). When you simply repeat things you can already do, you are doing "intrinsic" practice. Your body's skills are being developed. Your brain is connected to the tips of your fingers and learning to respond automatically, without thinking. Before long, doing the new skill will become like second nature. Whether you are learning the piano, game of soccer, or pottery, if you switch between hard and easy practice, it will get easier. It is a great way to develop a more difficult skill.

One time in particular that comes to mind is one of my first projects last semester we were making face mold gargoyles and I didn't wedge and my project and it blew up in the kiln and ruined someone else's project. I felt pretty bad and ever since then I wedge my clay very well to prevent it from happening again.

One time I used too much glaze over another and the glaze had pulled back. I learned that I should use less glaze. I used less glaze from then on.

This one time I didn't slip and score, so my pieces fell off. From then on, I always slip and score to make sure what happened last time won't happen again.

Last year I was making a pot for plants and the slabs for the walls were to wet. The next day when I went to work on my project, the walls were warped, so it was difficult to put the fourth wall in place. It was frustrating because I had to use a knife to remove clay to make the pot a square. It took me longer to complete this project because of my mistake. However, now I know to wait till the slabs are harder to score and slip the pieces together. This will prevent it from warping and causing trouble.

One of the first projects I did in pottery one was creating a pinch pot creature. I chose to do a "teddy" bear. When I was almost done with this project someone was walking by my shelf and accidentally knocked it off. Thankfully it landed on its bottom. This mistake actually made it look cuter in a way. From this experience I learn that not all mistakes are bad, but they can actually be good.

I have made many mistakes while creating my pottery and I have learned from all of them. Some of the mistakes ruined my pottery but also I have made mistakes that actually helped my pottery look better than it looked before. My most recent mistake I have made was while I was working on the wheel. While I am throwing I tend to pull the walls up to quick which makes my walls uneven because I rush and I pull them up to fast. When I trim my foot ring it is always uneven. I tend to rush and work fast which creates many mistakes for me and I am trying to work slower to avoid my mistakes.

I can't recall to many I've made, but one might have been in pottery 1 when I left something I was working on out and forgot to cover it. It sat for the whole weekend and it turned bone dry and thus I wasn't able to work on it any further since I couldn't mold it.

Our first project this semester, the spheres, I accidentally left my clay on the bowl covered with newspaper. It dried out and I was so frustrated trying to get the clay off without breaking it. In the end, it broke into multiple pieces. It was still leather hard, so I tried to stick the pieces together using slip. I thought it was completely ruined until I was told I could make it look like a piece if old pottery if I left it broken and used the slip for texture. I learned that even if something goes wrong in pottery, you can always get something out of it.

The first time that I had a artistic "mistake" was when I used two glazes and it turned out really bad. The two glazes did not go well together, this made my bowl look really funny looking. This made me feel mad and upset because it did not come out the way I wanted it too. I learn not to mix the two glazes together.

In pottery 1 I would never wedge my clay well enough. This caused my projects to take longer and had the whole process a huge hassle. Thankfully I haven't had anything explode in the kiln because of this. I still have trouble with this today, and it just makes the process ten times longer than it needs to be. It's definitely something I really need to work on

I used to be very sloppy in pottery 1. I wouldn't take the time to really perfect my pieces so they were never anything I was super proud of. Towards the end of the semester, however, I tried harder and took more time on each of my pieces and this semester I will take my time as well.

Making mistakes are how a lot of amazing things are created. Throwing on the wheel you make a lot of mistakes and can frustrate you. But something that you thought would destroy your peice actually makes it beautiful. All art has moments of ugliness, but you have to keep going.

One time I didn't put my sphere on a sponge. I placed it on a hard surface instead and it flattened on the bottom. It now looks like a rock.

Artistic mistakes are what shape us into the creative craftsmen we are. My first ever piece of pottery in pottery 1 was a pinch pot creature. This was obviously one of my most unattractive pieces, but as I reflect I realize that without crossing that bridge and barrier I wouldn't be at the level I am at now. I still are no where near a skillful artist, but mistakes that we learn from are what transform us from good to great.

One time I used too much glaze on a piece when I only should've done one coat, so that the other glaze I had put on top came through more and it just looked like one soiled color

A mistake of mine that I have learned from would be to always poke holes in everything you do because if you don't, things will explode and you could not only screw up your piece but you could hurt other peoples pieces.

Time. That was always my artistic mistake. I never took enough time to actually get any of the pieces right. I would always stress, and that's what got me. My pieces, even my most beautiful ones, have flaws that even non artist can point out. Nothing blew up; I'm thankful for that at least, but the design, building, and the glazing. I messed up at least one of two. On rare occasions, all three, to my opinion.

I learned a lot from making my tea pot. I learned that managing your time wisely is a big thing because my spout fell off a few times do to different moisture levels in the clay and sometimes things dried out to fast making it hard to piece everything together. Also when glazing it I think I put to much gloss glaze on it causing the design to be less noticeable and faded when fired.
